The artist's works and style

An artist who was active in the Landes region during the 20th century, Jean Roger Sourgen is a French painter influenced by the French Impressionists. His paintings are mostly landscape scenes, representing reality fairly faithfully, yet using broad flat tints of paint as well as very pastel shades.

The life of Jean Roger Sourgen

Jean Roger Sourgen was a painter from the south of France born in 1883.

Very few details are known about his life and artistic output.

He mostly produced oils on canvas, most likely exhibited in the region where he originated and where he evolved throughout his career : the Landes. His canvases are impressionistic, although in some respects realistic. His preferred color is green, the fact being that Landes landscapes are predominantly composed of trees - though he also uses a lot of violet, in order to faithfully retranscribe the landscapes.

His gouache works are also highly prized, but generally achieve lower results than his oil paintings.

Jean Roger Sourgen did not make a lasting mark on his period on a national scale, and was not widely known during his lifetime. However, some collectors appreciated his work, and the majority of his paintings are kept in private homes.
