The life of Jean Lurçat
Jean Lurçat was born in the Vosges in 1892. His vocation for painting soon became apparent. After training in the studio of Jean Prouvé, Lurçat decided to move to Paris, where his career would be easier to build.
The first years in the capital were to be extremely enriching for the young artist. Indeed, at just 20, Jean Lurçat attended several major academies as well as numerous avant-garde artists' groups.
Jean Lurçat discovered tapestry in 1917. He quickly established himself as a major artist of modern tapestry. His creations were then exhibited internationally, and the artist collaborated with the manufacture des Gobelins.
Inspired by medieval tapestry artists, Jean Lurçat reinvented the technique, using numbered cartons, robust broad-stitch weaving and reduced palettes.
In addition to painting and tapestry, Jean Lurçat produced ceramics, engravings and a few stage sets. He also joined the Resistance during the Second World War, writing articles for the underground press.
Throughout his career, Jean Lurçat collaborated with great artists of his time such as Raoul Dufy and André Derain. Lurçat died in 1966, leaving his famous series of tapestries Le chant du Monde unfinished.
The artist's works and style
Jean Lurçat thus combined traditional techniques with a modern approach with the aim of creating unique, captivating works. His highly recognizable style is characterized by vivid colors, flowing lines and abstract forms.
Inspired by nature, the motifs most used by the artist are flowers, birds and fish. He also depicted a great deal of landscape and incorporated mythological and symbolic elements into his compositions.
Jean Lurçat was also known for his works of a social and political nature. Indeed committed, the artist expressed his convictions through his tapestries, dealing with subjects such as war, social injustice and the struggle for freedom.
