The life of Jean Lurçat

Jean Lurçat was born in the Vosges in 1892. His vocation for painting soon became apparent. After training in the studio of Jean Prouvé, Lurçat decided to move to Paris, where his career would be easier to build.

The first years in the capital were to be extremely enriching for the young artist. Indeed, at just 20, Jean Lurçat attended several major academies as well as numerous avant-garde artists' groups.

Jean Lurçat discovered tapestry in 1917. He quickly established himself as a major artist of modern tapestry. His creations were then exhibited internationally, and the artist collaborated with the manufacture des Gobelins.

Inspired by medieval tapestry artists, Jean Lurçat reinvented the technique, using numbered cartons, robust broad-stitch weaving and reduced palettes.

In addition to painting and tapestry, Jean Lurçat produced ceramics, engravings and a few stage sets. He also joined the Resistance during the Second World War, writing articles for the underground press.

Throughout his career, Jean Lurçat collaborated with great artists of his time such as Raoul Dufy and André Derain. Lurçat died in 1966, leaving his famous series of tapestries Le chant du Monde unfinished.
