The artist was born in China in 1920. He was introduced to art at an early age by his father and grandfather, both of whom were enthusiasts of Chinese painting. At a very young age, he received special instruction in classical Chinese calligraphy and poetry. He entered theHangzhou Academy of Fine Arts at just 15, where he studied modern Western painting and its techniques as well as traditional Chinese painting. Just graduating at 21, Chu Teh-Chun is an assistant professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. His painting is strongly influenced by the French avant-gardes: Cézanne, Matisse and Derain. These influences will result in his career in a fusion astonishing between traditional Chinese and Western art. In 1955, the painter arrives in Paris, settles in the Latin Quarter and reunites with fellow painter Zao Wou-ki. His travels in Europe enable him to discover a plurality of influences that are to mark his work: Goya, El Greco, Nicolas de Staël, among others.

In the mid-1960s and until 1978, the painter emancipates himself from any gallery, any contract, and holds twenty-four exhibitions throughout Europe. His painting is abstract and contemplative, the artist exploring monochromes and playing with light. He is renowned for his clairs-obscurs powerful, nebulous universe. He became a French national in 1981. After an evolution marked by Western art, the painter returned to calligraphy and his Chinese roots. He completed his last project in his adopted country, France, where he executed 58 vases in collaboration with the Manufacture de Sèvres.
