Style and technique by artist Bengt Lindstrom
Most of Bengt Lindstrom's work focuses on color work. He tends towards total abstraction, which is not yet perfect abstraction. He relates himself to the painting of Nolde, Ensor or Munch.
The life of Bengt Lindstrom
Bengt Lindstrom (1925-2008), a Swedish artist, became a major figure in the 20th-century art world. He studied painting at the Stockholm Academy, then at the Grünewald School of Painting, and finally with the painter Jorgensen in Copenhagen.
Little by little, like Braque or Mondrian, he worked on shapes, colors and their meaning, and in so doing helped Nordic painting evolve. He would seek to go ever further in the quest for abstraction, but made the opposite choice to his peers : at the start of his career, he painted with few colors, and added more, playing with contrasts as he went along.
He also worked for public places and painted sculptures, where his style marked by primary colors and thick lines is still recognizable.
He lived in Paris for most of his career, although he traveled to America and Sweden. His paintings are highly prized on the French and European markets, even if the artist is not very well known to the general public today.
He died in Paris following a stroke, and his heirs are still disputing his estate today, especially as regards the moral rights to his work.
The legacy of Bengt Lindstrom
Lindstrom marked his time with his contribution to Swedish painting. He produced not only oils on canvas, but also lithographs and other drawings. His early reflection on the use of color in painting is evident in his work. He constantly exploits the contrast between warm and cold colors, as well as the use of thick, curved lines. Like Jacques Germain, he uses both brush and knife techniques to achieve large, relief-producing flat areas of color on his canvases.
Recognizing Bengt Lindstrom's signature
The artist's works are often signed. If he does, the signature appears at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background.
