Artist's style and technique
Claudius Linossier's aesthetic establishes him as one of the key artists of the French Art Deco movement. Among the many pieces he created, vases take pride of place, perfectly illustrating the geometric simplification characteristic of this movement. Linossier's motifs are inspired by Greek art.
As a coppersmith, Claudius Linossier practices traditional craftsmanship, enabling him to make unique metal pieces without resorting to welding. Linossier distinguishes himself by his ability to select different varieties of copper for each of his creations, making each piece unique, adorned with both archaic and geometric decoration, embellished with metallic inlays.
The life of Claudius Linossier
From a family of weavers, Claudius Linossier (1893-1953) took courses in silversmithing while being apprenticed to an artisan locksmith, following his school-leaving certificate.
A few months later, he joined a religious silversmith's workshop. Claudius Linossier's training provided him with comprehensive expertise in metalworking as well as inlay.
Very quickly enthralled by this ability to "paint with fire", Claudius Linossier traveled to the French capital, then at the height of the interwar emulation, to further develop his skills. In Paris, the artist met many people and spent his days in front of the Greek collections of the Louvre museum.
Very attached to his native Lyon, Claudius Linossier decided to open his studio there. There, he created his first pieces inspired by Greek vases and figures. Quickly exhibited, his works were much appreciated by art lovers and local critics alike. Linossier's success reaches as far as Paris, where he is exhibited and sold on rue royale and at the Salon d'Automne.
Claudius Linossier's imprint on his period
By the innovative quality of his work, Linossier wins the Florence Blumenthal Franco-American Foundation grant. This award contributed to the artist's international renown, particularly in the United States. His creations were exhibited in several museums as early as 1930.
Member of various groups such as "Art Décoratif Moderne", Claudius Linossier rubbed shoulders with other important artists and became a juror in various Art Déco competitions. In 1933, the artist exhibited with the "Groupe des Seize", mainly composed of artists from Lyon.
A major figure in 20th-century Art Deco, Linossier leaves behind a considerable artistic legacy.
