Style and technique by artist Ossip Zadkine
Zadkine's creations are steeped in abstract art. He drew his inspiration from multiple references. He produced a few oils on canvas, but also used gouache extensively, even though most of his works are sculptures.
The life of Ossip Zadkine
Ossip Zakedine was a Russian artist born in 1888 in Vitebsk.
He left early on his father's orders to study English in Sunderland, northern England. He spent much time at the British Museum once he settled in London, where he studied classical sculpture. He rubbed shoulders with Sonia Delaunay, Picasso, Bourdelle and Matisse. His artistic output was to be heavily influenced by Cubism, and he became friends with Amedeo Modigliani.
When the First World War broke out, he was assigned to a Russian ambulance in the Légion Étrangère. This experience inspired him to paint many watercolors about the war. He traveled to Italy, exhibited in Tokyo and was bought by museums during his lifetime. The Barbazanges gallery devoted a retrospective to him in 1925. He moved to rue d'Assas in 1928, where he also set up his studio. Together with his wife, Valentine Prax, Zadkine acquires a country house in the Lot, where he stays when he's not in Paris.
During the Second World War, he goes into exile in the United States, as he is of Jewish origin. He taught there during the occupation and then returned to teach at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He continued to produce during this time, creating works in homage to Van Gogh. He continues to exhibit in the United States, Japan and Canada.
He dies in Neuilly sur Seine in 1967, aged 79.
