Artist's style and technique

Jean Le Moal belongs to the New Paris School, a group of foreign artists who produced work in Paris, although he is French. His works are not figurative.

His are mostly expressionist, he produced many prints, but also drawings and oils on canvas.

Jean Le Moal's life

Jean Olivier Joseph Le Moal was born in 1909 in Authon du Perche, Eure et Loir. After the death of his mother at an early age, he attended boarding school at the Lycée d'Annecy, where he became interested in sculpture and engraving. He began his artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He moved to Paris in 1929 and copied paintings from the Louvre. He worked in various studios in Montmartre, notably with Othon Friesz. Inspired by the Catalan frescoes he discovered in Barcelona, he enrolled at the Académie Ranson. He worked under the supervision of Maillol, but also in collaboration with Robert Delaunay. He was one of the founders of the New Paris School, which had links with degenerate art.

After the war, he held several exhibitions and experimented with stained glass painting, notably creating stained glass windows for the cathedrals of Nantes and Rennes. Preparatory drawings for these works are often shown at auction.

His painting maintains stylistic links with that of Olivier Debré, but also of Maurice Estève.

The artist died in 2007, with numerous retrospectives devoted to him before and after his death.

Jean Le Moal's imprint on his period

Jean Le Moal is not a painter widely known to the general public, either during his lifetime or today. His figurative and expressionist paintings are, however, appreciated by collectors and have a certain success at auction.
