The artist's style and technique
Dunoyer de Segonzac's works are characterized by synthetic, pared-down compositions (i.e., the horizon line is drawn at the height of the painting), a sacrifice of detail and a simplification of light.
He produced works described as neo-realist that fit perfectly into the teeming output of the 20th century, and stood out among his peers. His most prized works at auction are surprisingly his watercolors depicting still lifes of flowers.
André Dunoyer de Segonzac, major figure of neorealism
André Albert Marie Dunoyer de Segonzac was born in Boussy-Saint-Antoine in 1884, to a noble mother and an officer father. He studied at the Lycée Henri IV, but was a mediocre student, which dissuaded his father from sending him to Saint-Cyr. In 1900, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then in 1903 the Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales, where he obtained a diploma in Sudanese. He trained for a time in Luc-Olivier Merson's studio, then became a student at the Académie Julian after completing his military service. A few years later, he obtained a studio at the Académie de la Palette in Montparnasse, then on rue Saint André des Arts, which he shared with several other artists. Bernard Borival called him a neo-realist during this period. He published his first drawings in the press in 1908.
The same year, Dunoyer de Segonzac exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants alongside Signac and Luce. During this period, he often travels to Versailles, a city he considers to represent " the spirit of France ". With Signac, he also worked in Saint-Tropez.
During the Great War, he was mobilized and fought at the front for three years, then drew inspiration from this period to produce drawings and war paintings. At the end of the war, he learns the technique of etching to produce publications in collaboration with Roland Dorgelès. He continued to produce drawings, prints and oils on canvas until his death in 1974, at the age of 90.

Dunoyer de Segonzac left a lasting mark on his period, notably through the grandeur of his output. Today, many of his works are exhibited in museums in France and around the world, but collectors play the greatest role in preserving his work.
