Style and technique of artist Alfred Reth

Alfred Reth is an Austro-Hungarian artist who belongs to the École de Paris. He produced prints, drawings and oils on canvas.

The life of Alfred Reth

Alfred Reth (1884 - 1966), was an Austro-Hungarian painter of the 20th century.

Born in Budapest to a modest Hungarian family, he began his professional career as a bank clerk.  He meets László Mednyánszky who teaches him to paint. He develops an interest in Buddhism and Oriental art, which is to influence his work. He moved to Paris in 1905 to further his career, and met the Orientalist painter Jean Buhot. He joins the Cubists in 1911, staying away from the Fauves. He befriended Georges Braque, Jean Metzinger and André de Segonzac in particular.

He exhibited in Berlin during these years, but was interned from 1914 as " citizen of a country enemy of France ". He turned to abstraction after the war, exhibiting at the Salon des Réalités nouvelles.

At the end of his career, he returned to more figurative work, practicing collage using printed sheets.

He died in Paris in 1966, aged 82.

Alfred Reth's imprint on his period

Alfred Reth made his own mark on the twentieth-century art world, devoting most of his work to abstraction. He is not very well known in Europe today, but his works are currently enjoying great success on the auction market. He remains one of the most important members of the École de Paris to this day.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Not all of Reth's works are signed. They may be at the bottom of the painting, usually with the inscription " A. Reth ", but if you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised to be sure of its originality.
