Pototskaya, painting Russia on porcelain

Alexandra Shchekotikhina-Pototskaya (1892-1967) was a renowned Russian artist. She was born in Alexandrovsk. She trained at the St. Petersburg School of Drawing, then moved to northern Russia to draw inspiration from peasant folk art and ancient architecture. In 1918, she joined the State Porcelain Factory, whose aim was to propagandize the ruling regime. To this end, she used pure pigment colors and remarkable precision. She used epidemics and the various plagues affecting the Russian people, such as famine and typhus. She created works in collaboration with her second husband, Ivan Bilibin, who is also her former teacher. Like avant-garde artists in France and Europe, she works extensively with colorimetry, following in the footsteps of Félix Vallotton and Vassily Kandinsky.

She is particularly fond of themes relating to eternal Russia. Her work was artistic and intellectual, but also propaganda for the Russian Soviet regime. She then moved to Paris, where she was able to associate with European avant-garde artists and exhibit at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. After a few years in France, she and her husband returned to Russia, and she resumed her work at the Leningrad factory. Bilibin died of starvation during the siege at the start of the Second World War. Pototskaya survived despite suffering from pneumonia. She died in St. Petersburg at the age of 75.

Alexandra Shchekatikhina-Pototskaya's imprint on her period

Pototskaya marked her time with her artistic commitment. She also participated in the evolution and modernization of Russian porcelain. Few of the artist's works are in circulation today on the art market, which increases collector interest when one of them comes up for auction.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Pototskayas often signs her name at the bottom of her drawings, and her porcelains are signed and hallmarked. Copies may exist, so expertise remains important.
