The artist's works and style
Françoise Gilot's style is characterized by a bold use of color and geometric shapes. Fascinated by the relationship between shapes and colors, she explored how they could interact and create optical effects. In this way, the artist developed a visual language based on abstract compositions, often made up of geometric shapes such as circles, triangles and squares, organized in a dynamic, rhythmic way. Most of her work is part of Analytic Cubism, although there is a definite influence of American abstraction in her compositions.
Françoise Gilot's life
Françoise Gilot was born in 1921 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. Her mother, a painter, instilled in her a taste for art and a passion for painting.
She began her studies with a degree in law, but left to study at the Académie Julian in order to begin a career as an artist. Her father, formally opposed to this choice, cuts her off. Françoise Gilot then taught horseback riding in western Paris to support herself financially. She soon met Picasso, 40 years her senior, with whom she had two children. They fed off each other's work, but the artist left Picasso in 1953 to live with her two children. Two years later, she left for the United States to pursue her career and gain notoriety.
She had the book Vivre avec Picasso published in 1964, recounting personal details of the two artists' lives. Picasso resented the disclosure of these events and took his ex-partner to court, while refusing to see his children.
She painted for around twelve hours a day in France and Manhattan or California, resulting in an extremely substantial output of at least 1,600 canvases and 3,600 works on paper (mixed media). Her work was exhibited in several US cities, as well as in Paris and Hong Kong.
She painted all her life and died in New York in 2023, at the age of 101.
