Baltasar Lobo is a Paris School artist who produces fairly abstract works. He is mostly famous for his bronze sculptures, but has also produced paintings, drawings and prints.

Baltasar Lobo or simplified figuration

Baltasar Lobo is a Spanish artist of the New School of Paris, born in 1910 in Castile.

He learned to carve wood and stone alongside his carpenter father as a child. From 1922, he began training in sculpture in a workshop, then entered the Beaux-Arts in Madrid. He left this institution after three months to create sculptural decorations for a cemetery. He then specialized in carving wood and marble. Lobo fled Franco's dictatorship a few years later, and managed to escape to the Ardèche. After a long journey, he arrived in Paris, where he was advised by Picasso and Henri Laurens. Influenced by Jean Arp and others, his originally figurative works became simpler. He worked extensively on female nudes, particularly in bronze - his most famous works. He traveled for some time, notably to La Ciotat where he worked for the shipyard. During this same period, he met the Spanish painter Antoni Tapies.

At the end of his career, he carried out a number of public commissions, including a war memorial for the town of Annecy.

He died in Paris in 1993.
