The life of Jacob Henrik Pierneef
Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef (1886-1957) was a South African painter relatively unknown to the general public. He was born in Pretoria into a family of Dutch immigrants and grew up in South Africa until the Second World War, when he fled to the Netherlands with his family. There, he began studying art. He returned to South Africa at the age of 18, where two painters and a relative helped him settle. He married Agatha Delen, and held his first solo exhibition in 1913. From 1918, he taught painting at Pretoria Academic College.
Some time later, he divorced, remarried, and in 1929 was commissioned to depict Johannesburg railway station. This is one of his best-known paintings. Following this achievement, he was asked to decorate the South African Embassy in London.
He died in Pretoria in 1957, aged 71.
