Pierre Dunand, undisputed master of lacquer

Pierre Dunand was born in 1914, the son of decorator Jacques Dunand.

He left school at 17 and joined his father's family business. At first, he produced dinanderie, i.e. brass and copper objects, but eventually became interested in lacquer work, like the painter Gaston Suisse. He takes up stylistic traits from his father in his work, and mixes lacquer painting and brassware.

He makes vases, but is best known for his screens - inspired by Japanese screens.

In his lifetime, he is not hugely successful in his father's workshop and does not receive many commissions, which is why he leaves the company to devote himself to other projects.

He died in 1996, having no idea of the success his works would meet on the art market a few years later.

His work is characterized by great diversity and remarkable richness: chairs, tables, desks, lamps, tapestries, as well as decorative objects such as screens and vases.
