His canvases and other works are particularly prized, especially by French buyers, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €30 to €280,000, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Victor Tardieu's works. In 2022, an oil on canvas entitled Les Pommes, étude de nu, dating from 1912 sold for €200,000, whereas it was estimated at between €20,000 and €40,000.

Artist's style and technique

Victor Tardieu is a twentieth-century artist to whom no particular movement is attached. His work is very much inspired by the Far East, and he produced impressionist works at the start of his career, but experimented with many pictorial genres. He used drawing and oil on canvas, which are more common on the auction market.

Tardieu, rising star of the art market

Victor Tardieu (1870-1937) was a French painter and draughtsman. He was born in Orléans, and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris at an early age, after having been a pupil at the Académie Julian. Léon Bonnat was for a time his teacher. His talent was soon noticed, and he exhibited at various Paris salons, collaborating with Félix Gaudin on stained glass.

The same year, he exhibited a large-format painting entitled Travail at the Salon de la Société des artistes français, which won him the Salon's first national prize. This prize includes a grant enabling him to travel for two years to Genoa, Liverpool and London. He finds new inspirations, but they do not exert a major influence on his career. His career, however, took an important turn when he moved to Indochina: after the Second World War, he settled there permanently. From then on, a Far Eastern flavour hung over his work, blending the pictorial techniques used at the time in Indochina with what he had learned from his studies in France.

On his return to France, he took part in the decoration of several buildings and contributed to the creation of frescoes.

He fought in the First World War, and on his return from the front produced a number of war paintings. In 1925, he founded the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine, now the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts du Vietnam with Nguyen Nam Son. He then directed it for eleven years, and learned

Tardieu's imprint on his era

His career spanned several decades, and he was widely recognized for his contribution to twentieth-century art. He influenced and inspired many artists after him, and was widely disseminated in his day thanks to his status as Professor in Indochina. His work is highly appreciated for its transversal influence on French and Vietnamese art, as well as on the various currents of the 20th century. 

Today, Victor Tardieu's works are highly appreciated on the auction market. His quotation is high, but his works present a strong potential result at auction  it should therefore continue to increase.
