The life of Jean Picart le Doux
Jean Picart le Doux (1902 - 1982) was born in Paris. He was the son of Charles Picart le Doux, a 19th-century painter. His mother died when he was five, and he was raised by his grandparents in Paris. He attended the Lycée Condorcet, but dropped out of high school at the age of sixteen to take up bookbinding. He then drifted into advertising and graphic arts, but managed to make a name for himself in all fields. His activity enabled him to publish his first works in 1935. In 1943, he won the grand prize for theater posters at the Salon de l'imagerie.
He went on to collaborate with Jean Lurçat, on a magazine cover project. With him and Marc de Saint-Saëns, he founded the Association des peintres cartonniers de tapisserie in 1947.
Exhibiting in France and then Switzerland, he met graphic designers and planned to found an international graphic alliance.
Aubusson would produce four hundred original tapestries by Le Doux, which is considerable. Some of his tapestries are selected to decorate variable interiors, notably that of the liner France.
Le Doux was also involved in the artistic life of his time, joining the Board of Directors of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
He died in Venice in 1982, leaving behind a colossal legacy.
