Style and technique by artist Sergey Chekhonin

Chekhonin is a 20th-century Russian artist, who mainly produced drawings, oils on canvas and paintings on porcelain. He is not really associated with any particular movement, but is influenced by Russian art under the Soviet regime and by European Expressionism.

Sergey Chekhonin, pioneer of twentieth-century Russian art

Serge Chekhonin or Sergey Chekhonin (1878 - 1936), was a Russian painter and decorator born in Russia.

Chekhonin was initially a civil servant for the Russian railroads, a job thanks to which he often traveled to Saint Petersburg. There, he attended the Stiglitz School, where he learned ceramics from Schreiber and pottery from Répine. He then worked as a potter in Moscow for several years, before leaving for Paris in 1906, where he organized an exhibition of Russian folk art. He then returned to St. Petersburg, where he successively directed various pottery workshops, to which he invited Alexandra Shchekotikhina-Pototskaya. He returned to France for good in 1928, and changed his artistic horizon slightly by collaborating with theaters and developing a decorating business. This is why many of these drawings can be found on the auction market.

Chekhonin died in Germany at the age of 58.

Sergey Chekhonin's imprint on his time

Chekhonin was a prominent member of Le monde de l'art society, leaving an important legacy in art history. His works are colorful and highly expressive.

He produced fewer works than some artists of the same era, but remained true to himself, exhibiting his work all over Europe.

From his time until today, he was and remains an artist appreciated by collectors worldwide. The latter play a very important role in preserving his work, although a few canvases and drawings signed by him are exhibited in museums in France and around the world.
