The life of Leopold Gottlieb

Leopold Gottlieb was born in Poland in 1883. At his parents' initiative, Gottlieb entered the Krakow School of Fine Arts at a young age. After studying in Munich, Leopold Gottlieb founded the Groupe des Cinq in 1905. This collective would exist for just one year. They will nevertheless exhibit their work in Poland and abroad.

Leopold Gottlieb settles in Paris after a year's training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Jerusalem. He became an active artist in the Montparnasse community, frequenting renowned painters of the time such as Diego Rivera and André Salmon. In addition to his life in France, Leopold Gottlieb remained attached to his native Poland and took an active part in the Formists movement, which caused a sensation at the time by combining Cubist and Surrealist influences.

Also a Paris School artist, Leopold Gottlieb participated in the Jewish emancipation of the interwar period, fostered by the cosmopolitan context of Europe's major cities. His political commitment also made a name for himself. Indeed, Gottlieb took part in the debates in favor of Polish independence and supported Polish patriotism.

During the First World War, the artist lived in his native country. He then painted the daily lives of Polish soldiers, the scenes being published in a typographical collection a few years later. After teaching at the Academy of Arts in Zakopane, Gottlieb returned to France.

After suffering from liver disease, he died in Paris in 1933, leaving behind a significant artistic legacy.
