The artist's works and style
Maxime Noiré's works are characterized by their realistic style and warm tones. Influenced by the artistic current of realism, as well as by the motifs and colors of Islamic and Berber art, his paintings often depict Algerian landscapes or the characters who have marked his life and inspiration. He produced very balanced compositions, the result of highly accomplished work on perspective.
Maxime Noiré : painting the Orient
Maxime Noiré was born in the Moselle region of France in 1861.
He had no particular artistic training in France like other painters of his movement and period (Majorelle, Jouve...). Noiré was completely self-taught and moved to Algeria in 1882, aged just 21. There, he drew inspiration from the landscapes and the Algerians he met, producing oil paintings characteristic of Orientalist painting. He was particularly fond of the Aurès region, where he eventually settled permanently; Étienne Doiret, an Orientalist painter of the same period, worked with him in his studio.
Famous for his work in his day, he was appointed peintre de la Marine et des Colonies in 1905 by the French state. This title had little impact on his career; he would continue to receive approximately the same number of commissions. In the same years, he co-founded the société des artistes algériens orientalistes. At the end of his career, journalist and critic Isabelle Edernhardt said of Noiré that he was " the painter of horizons and fire and weeping almond trees ".
He thus made his mark on the art scene far from France, through orientalism (characterizing painting inspired by the Orient) - not an artistic movement as such Noiré's canvases were inspired by the pictorial techniques of his time, featuring highly developed light work. His paintings fall somewhere between realism and impressionism.
Maxime Noiré's imprint on his time
Maxime Noiré is one of the most sought-after Orientalist painters at auction today, and although his paintings don't fetch very high sums, it's very likely that his valuation will rise sharply in the future. He wasn't exhibited much in Europe during his lifetime, but as Orientalist works are highly sought-after today, it's now the European market that demands his paintings most.
