The life of Le Corbusier

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret Gris, known as Le Corbusier (1887 - 1965) was a leading designer and painter of the early 20th century. Born in the Swiss canton of Neuchatel, he was one of the leading exponents of the modern movement.

His father, Georges-Édouard Jeanneret, was a watch engraver and enameller. He began training as an engraver-chiseler in Switzerland, following in his father's footsteps. He won his first distinction at the Salon des Arts Décoratifs in Turin in 1902, when he was just 15. His eyesight problems prevented him from engraving watches, so he abandoned this career idea and decided to become a painter. He took drawing lessons in France, but his teacher recommended decorating. He decorated his first villa at the age of 17, proving to be a very promising artist, even though he had put painting on the back burner. Together with Auguste Perret, he became interested in reinforced concrete, and opened his own architectural practice in 1912. From 1917 onwards, he prepared architectural projects aimed at rebuilding what the war had destroyed, taking a keen interest in purism. He adopts the pseudonym Le Corbusier for the first time in 1920, which he keeps throughout his career.

He works on his persona consisting of large dark glasses, cigarettes and Italian suits.

However, he continued to paint throughout his career, with the art market now proving him right as his paintings are currently his most highly-rated works.

Le Corbusier died in 1965 in the Alpes Maritimes, aged 77.
