Style and technique by artist Shiro Kuramata
Shiro Kuramata, a 20th-century contemporary designer, has produced a great deal of innovative furniture. He is not associated with any particular movement, but constructs his own minimalist, elegant style, innovating in the choice of materials and the form of furniture.
Shiro Kumarata, his life, his work
Shiro Kumarata (1934-1991) was born in Tokyo. He studied architecture in Tokyo, then design at Kuwasawa.
In 1965, he opened his studio, which he named Kuramata design office. Like Warren Platner, he is an interior designer and furniture decorator. He designs furniture for the Memphis group. Issey Miyake entrusts him with the decoration of boutiques in Paris, Tokyo and New York. He travels all over the world, renewing his inspiration. With his European clientele very much in evidence, he opened a studio in Paris in 1988.
He created great works that were major innovations for his time, such as the all-glass chair or the Miss blanche chair, in which he inlaid rose petals, inspired by Vivien Leigh and Un tramway nommé désir, Pulitzer Prize 1948.
He was much inspired by Mondrian, copying his patterns and colors onto furniture, as Saint Laurent had done on dresses.
He sought the immaterial in his works, working a lot with glass or metal, which he made very airy. Many of his works were produced as limited editions, which is why they are so successful at auction.
Shiro Kuramata's imprint on American and global furniture
Shiro Kuramata made a lasting mark on global design furniture, and brought many innovations to it. He was one of the first to make such extensive use of glass as the sole constituent material of his furniture. His works can be seen all over the world in museums, but private collectors play the greatest role in preserving his work.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Kuramata's works are not signed. This is why, if you think you own a work by or after the artist, it is essential to have it appraised by an expert who will be able to authenticate it.
