The life of Antonio Tempesta

Antonio Tempesta was a Mannerist painter born in Florence in 1555.

He trained with Giovanni Stradano, the two artists decorating Florence's Palazzo Vecchio together. He produced canvases, but also worked on numerous frescoes, including some in Rome for Pope Gregory XIII. His style is late Mannerist - and is much appreciated by the capital's nobles, from whom he receives numerous commissions.

Returning to Florence, he creates some of the ceilings in the Uffizi Gallery, before returning to Rome where he explores the medium of engraving, not widely used at the time.

His unique style, combining mannerism and religious subjects, influenced many artists of the time and continues to be admired by art lovers today.

He painted the frescoes and ceilings of many of Italy's most important buildings, including the Vatican maps, Rome's San Giovanni des Fiorentini church, the Galleria delle Offices ... although he is relatively unknown to the general public. Today, his works are highly regarded on the art market.
