Stomer studied painting in Antwerp, a thriving city for the arts at the time, before moving to Rome, where he spent much of his artistic career. Stomer was particularly adept at capturing the interplay of light and shadow in his paintings, creating dramatic and mysterious atmospheres characteristic of the Northern schools at the time.
