Artist's style and technique
Stefano Maderno is a late-Renaissance artist who produced a variety of sculptures as part of the Baroque movement. His work is linked to Italian Mannerism, as he oscillates between this period and the golden age of the Baroque.
Stefano Maderno, his life, his work
Stefano Maderno (1576-1636), an Italian artist, became a key figure in Italian sculpture. He worked mainly in Rome, where he produced sculptures in bronze, alabaster and marble.
Particularly famous for having repeatedly sculpted Saint Cecilia and the scene of her martyrdom, his masterpiece The Martyrdom of Saint Cecilia, summoning the technical and artistic prowess of wet drapery sculpted in marble, is preserved in the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. It was thanks to this work that he was admitted to the Academy of Saint Luke in 1607.
However, he was eclipsed from the Roman art scene because of Bernini, whose talent took up too much space.
Stefano Maderno's imprint on his period
Stefano Maderno is an artist known to lovers of sculpture and painting, he is the author of a rather small artistic output. The majority of his works are now held by private collectors, increasing the value and success of his works on the auction market.
His bronzes are particularly prized because they are absolutely unique pieces that reveal the artist's inspiration and way of working, but his sculptures are indisputably his most famous and prized works, which are constantly breaking records on the auction market.
Recognizing Stefano Maderno's signature
It's not always easy to decipher or even be lucky enough to come across a signed work by Maderno. He did, however, sign his work with his name in cursive letters, and often dated his sculptures.
