The life of Armand Guillaumin
Armand Guillaumin was born in Paris in 1841.
He studied painting with his uncle, then with sculptor Louis Denis Caillouette. In 1860, he joined the Orleans railroad company, unable yet to make a living from his artistic production. However, he befriended Cézanne and Pisarro, with whom he exhibited at the Salon des refusés.
He painted with them and Van Gogh at Auvers sur Oise. He works in etching, but his major production remains painting. His favorite subject is water he often depicts rivers or the sea.
At the end of his career, the shades he employs are more colorful, moving closer to Fauvism. Othon Friesz admired and drew inspiration from this part of his career.
He died in Orly in 1927.
