Henri Pille, forgotten illustrator

Henri Pille (1844-1897) was a French painter and illustrator. He was born in the Aisne but soon moved to Paris, where he was a pupil of Jean-Antoine Gros and then François-Joseph Barrias. After taking part in the 1864 and 1865 Salons, he travels to Germany and Switzerland. Ten years later, he built himself a house and studio in Montmartre. He quickly became famous during his lifetime, and received a number of awards, including the gold medal from the Ministry of the Emperor's Household and Fine Arts. He produced a few history paintings, but mostly genre scenes with ironic strokes.

He worked for Alphonse Lemerre, a Parisian publisher, to whom he sold illustrations. He produced a huge number of drawings for many of the newspapers of the time.

Van Gogh met him in Paris and expressed great admiration for his work.

At the end of his career, he became President of the Association of Illustrating Artists. He also took part in the jury for the Exposition internationale de noir et blanc.

He probably died of illness at the age of 53, with William Adolphe Bouguereau attending his funeral.

Today, his work has been forgotten by the general public. Yet he was an important figure in the art world of his time.

Pille's imprint on his time

His career spanned several decades, and he was widely recognized for his contribution to nineteenth-century art. He influenced and inspired many artists after him, and was widely disseminated in his day thanks to the press. Nowadays, his works are successful at auction with collectors.
