Alfred Stevens, huile sur toile

Style and technique of artist Alfred Stevens

Alfred Stevens is a painter who belongs to both the realist and impressionist currents, drawing much inspiration from Delacroix and Ingres. He is one of the most eminent realist painters of the 19th century. He produced drawings, oils on canvas, and a few prints.

The life of Alfred Stevens

Alfred Émile Léopold Stevens (1823 - 1906), was a Belgian painter of the 19th century.

His father was a collector of paintings, particularly works by Delacroix and Géricault. He therefore evolved in an artistic environment from childhood and throughout his life  he had a brother who was an animal painter, a second brother who was an art dealer, and would also have a painter son.

He began his training in the studio of painter François-Joseph Navez, and moved to Paris on the advice of Roqueplan. Here he met Baudelaire, Aurélien Scholl and Degas, three artists who would be part of his circle of friends for the rest of his life. He studies in Ingres' studio at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. There, he copied masterpieces from the Louvre, but also produced works of his own, which he presented for the first time at the 1855 Universal Exhibition. His rise to fame was meteoric, and he exhibited at the Antwerp Salon that same year, and was decorated by the King of Belgium for his painting Chez Soi.

His artistic inspiration was nourished by his acquaintances, and he rubbed shoulders with many painters and sculptors, as well as writers; Eugène Delacroix and Alexandre Dumas were witnesses to his marriage. It was through them that he acquired an important sensitivity. He not only enjoyed a successful career, but also ensured that his friends did too: for example, he offered Degas a contract to exhibit his paintings in Belgium, and became an important figure in the art market of the time.

Precursor for his time, he opened a painting studio for women, which Sarah Bernhardtfrequented.

Caught by some health problems at the end of his career, he questioned his work but continued to deliver large commissions while trying his hand at Impressionism.

He died in Paris in 1906, some time after he had stopped painting.
