Style and technique by artist Boris Grigoriev
Grigoriev was part of the Russian avant-garde, producing work on Futurism. He was far ahead of his time, and a forerunner in the development of contemporary Russian art. His preferred medium remained oil on canvas, although he also produced drawings and prints.
Boris Grigoriev, a major figure in contemporary Russian art
Boris Grigoriev is a Russian-Swedish artist born in Moscow in 1886, of an illegitimate union. His father recognized him when he was 4 and raised him in Russia. He says he didn't have a very happy childhood because of his Swedish origins and his status as a child born out of wedlock in an extremely conservative politico-social context.
Art interested him from an early age, he took courses at the Strogonov School of Fine Arts, then at that of Saint - Petersburg. He traveled to Paris, where the 20th century was challenging all the academic structures and pictorial processes of contemporary art. He returned to Russia, where he became one of the leading representatives of the Russian avant-garde, gaining recognition and teaching. Left-leaning, he was forced to leave Russia clandestinely for Holland. Spending some time in Berlin, he ended his career in Paris. He was acutely aware of his talent, calling himself " master of the world ", with a sacred life that feared nothing.
At the end of his career, he created a monumental painting for the League of Nations.
He died in 1939 in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
Grigoriev's imprint on his period
Griogoriev left his mark on his era in Russia, France and Europe, although the general public doesn't remember him much today. Nevertheless, his technical mastery and personal history are of interest to collectors : his works are highly sought-after on the auction market.
