Marie Bashkirtseff, committed artist

Maria Constantinova Bashkirtseva (1860-1884) was a renowned French artist. She was born in the Russian Empire but grew up abroad, her parents traveling all over the world when she was a child. She came from a wealthy noble family. She studied classical literature and then painting at the Julian Academy. She painted portraits but also more committed works, such as her painting entitled the meeting. She was keen to depict the poor and women. Her action also took the form of art criticism, participating with the 1881 Salon critic in Hubertine Auclert's magazine la Citoyenne under a pseudonym.

She died in tragic circumstances at the age of 25, stricken with tuberculosis.

Marie Bashkirtseff's imprint on her period

Bashkirtseff marked her time with her artistic and literary commitment. Unfortunately, some of her works were burned by the Nazis during the occupation. Few of the artist's works are in circulation today on the art market, increasing collectors' interest when one of them comes up for auction.
