Rating and value of the artist Sophie Allart

Sophie Allart is an artist known to portrait enthusiasts. To date, her works have never been presented on the French auction market. In comparison with other painters in the same situation - artistically speaking, as well as in terms of visibility, we assume that her works could reach unheard-of amounts at auction. Female artists of the 19th century, students in the studios of undisputed masters such as David or Ingres, such as Adelaïde Labille-Guiard, are seeing their value rise considerably on today's art market. For the latter, whose output is close to Sophie Allart's, a portrait of a woman sold for €1,040 in 1989, while the Portrait de la duchesse d'Aiguillon, similar in compositional treatment and choice of colors, sold for €540,000 at Sotheby's in 2018.

Style and technique of artist Sophie Allart

Sophie Allart produces mainly oils on canvas, belonging to the neoclassical movement by producing mainly portraits, particularly of women. She was a pupil of the neoclassical and later Orientalist painter Ingres.

Sophie Allart, portraying women between Paris and Rome

Sophie Allart is an artist born under the Empire in Paris, in 1804 - when the neoclassical trend in painting was at its height. She is the sister of writer Hortense Allart.

The artist studied in Ingres' studio from 1924. Aged just 20, she showed remarkable talent and precision in portraiture. She befriended Ingres, and worked with him for many years. The Duc d'Orléans of the time (the future King Louis Philippe) commissioned numerous paintings from her for his personal collection ; which established her legitimacy and gained her recognition among potential commissioners from the nobility and haute-bourgeoisie (likely to be portrayed in turn).

In 1826, she made her first visit to Rome, and produced a few copies while continuing her artistic training in a self-taught manner, observing and reproducing works and techniques.

Throughout her career, she made various regular trips between Paris and Rome, and painted more in Italy than in France. In fact, she returned to Paris to exhibit her paintings at the Salon.

In Rome, she met Benjamin Gabriac, a French merchant, whom she married (which is why her works are also identified with this second surname).

She died in Rome in 1870.

Sophie Allart's imprint on her period

Sophie Allart left her mark on nineteenth-century academic art, and today she is a relatively unknown but in-demand artist, famous for her contribution to the neoclassical movement and the portrait genre.

Her works have never been sold at auction and could therefore reach unprecedented sums.

One of her drawings is preserved in the Louvre, and one of her oils on canvas is kept by the Maison de Chateaubriand.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Sophie Allart does not necessarily sign her works. Copies may exist, which is why expertise remains important.
