Raoul Larche, his life, his work

François Raoul Larche (1860-1912), a French sculptor, became an important figure in Art Nouveau sculpture in the 19th century.

He was born in Gironde, France, into a family of artists.

He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, then at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There, he is trained by several artists, including Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Falguière. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1884, winning the second Prix de Rome for sculpture. At the same time, he was awarded gold medals at various Expositions Universelles.

Like Agathon Léonard, he was seduced by the iconography of the dancer, which he often reused, notably for his 1901 lamp, inspired by Loïe Fuller. These pieces were published by Siot-Decauville, a Parisian foundry.

He died after a car accident.

Raoul Larche's imprint on his period

Some of Raoul Larche's works are visible and scattered around various cities in Europe, but relatively few: the bulk of his output is in private collections. He leaves a legacy in the history of 19th-century art and sculpture.
