Joseph Gabriel Tourny was a 19th-century neoclassical artist who produced mainly portraits. There are few works on the auction market. He produced drawings as well as a few oils on canvas.

The life of Joseph Gabriel Tourny

Joseph Gabriel Tourny (1817-1880) began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Achille Louis Martinet. He began his career with engravings, mainly using the burin technique. He then exhibited watercolors at the Salon.

Although his engravings were not yet circulating on the art market, the artist nevertheless won the second Prix de Rome in intaglio. He later won the Grand Prix.

He died in Montpellier in 1880, having lived all his life in the Paris region.
