Style and technique of the artist Gaston Chaissac
Gaston Chaissac fits into the denomination of'art brut, coined by Jean Dubuffet. This term encompasses his collection of marginal, mad or mystical artists who did not fit into any particular movement.
Gaston Chaissac, a prized painter
Gaston Chaissac (1910-1964), a French artist, became a figure prized by collectors.
His schooling was chaotic, but he attended drawing classes taken by his sister and began drawing himself. He was often ill as a child, and quickly turned in on himself, which would later influence the way he painted. His suffering can be felt in his portraits, giving the impression that the figures are imprisoned in his canvases.
He left school early to enter an apprenticeship, and lost his mother at the same time. His sister went off to live on her own, also hardships he would endure.
In 1934, he moved to Paris with his brother, where he worked as a shoemaker. As luck would have it, the painter Otto Freundlich lived in the same building as him and encouraged him to launch his career as an artist with his wife until his deportation and subsequent death in 1944. This too was an ordeal that Chaissac endured with difficulty. In the meantime, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and had to leave the capital to recover. He was treated in the Dordogne, where he met his future wife. He lived for a while in Provence, then moved to the Vendée, where he was unhappy as everyone thought he was crazy. A decade later, Iris Clert had him exhibited in Paris alongside Yves Klein.
At the end of his career, Jean Dubuffet, with whom he always remained friends, in turn exhibited him alongside all the art brut artists he had brought together.

Gaston Chaissac marked his era with the originality of his work. He was not always well understood by his peers and the general public, but his work remains highly regarded for the strength that emanates from his paintings. He remains highly regarded on the auction market today and is recognized in 20th-century contemporary art.
