Rating and value of the artist Geo Verbanck

Considered one of the last classical sculptors, Verbanck was also a medallist. He follows in the artistic vein of Charles van der Stappen and Louis van Bisbroeck. His legacy therefore consists mainly of sculptures made from several types of material, including granite, marble, ivory and Euville stone. Most of his work consists of building decorations. At present, prices for his works are rising recurrently at auctioneers' gavels. His sculptures are prized, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €300 to €9,500, a considerable delta, which nevertheless speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Geo Verbranck's works. In 2020, one of his bronze sculptures dating from 1922 sold for €6 000, while it was estimated at between €2 000 and €3 000.

Style and technique of artist Geo Verbank

The artist is inspired by the style of theart nouveau school, of which he was a pupil, and keeps in mind the teachings of one of his masters : Van der Stappen. He sculpted in a variety of materials, eventually joining the Symbolist movement.

The life of artist Geo Verbanck

Geo Verbanck (1881-1961), a French artist, became an important figure in the twentieth-century art world, notably as a creator of monuments. He studied sculpture at the Académie Royale des Beaux-arts in Brussels, with Van der Stappen and Jean Delvin. In 1909, he entered a work in the national sculpture competition and won second place in the prestigious Prix de Rome.

He took part in national and even larger exhibitions, as well as world fairs. Among other works, he created a monument to the memory of the Van Eyck brothers in Ghent, his home town. The work was inaugurated by the King of Belgium himself. In 1941, he was awarded the " Grand prix des arts plastiques " by the Belgian State, for his overall work. He was a successful medallist during his lifetime, but the major part of his work remains public commissions.

Geo Verbanck's imprint on his period

Geo Verbanck made friends with numerous artists, including Valentin Waerwyck with whom he collaborated and evolved. His best-known exhibition was in 1913, when he presented a monument in honor of the Van Eycks, two artists of great importance in Northern European art and, more broadly, in the Flemish Renaissance.

Subsequently, his participation in other such events and in various art prizes left their mark on the art world.

He reproduced and drew inspiration from the techniques of his predecessors and mentors, but developed a stylistic identity of his own. The curves of his late sculptures become smoother and rounder than at the beginning of his career. Steeped in several currents, notably Art Nouveau, he eventually evolved with the times, embracing Symbolism. He eventually became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, his home town, which he never really left.
