Style and technique of artist Mathurin Janssaud

Mathurin Janssaud makes oils on canvas but works mainly with watercolor. He also produces a lot of watercolors, and works little with prints. His favorite subject is the sea, boats and the ports of Brittany.

The life of Mathurin Janssaud

Mathurin Janssaud (1857-1940), French artist, was born in Manosque, in the Alpes de Haute-Provence. He remained there for only a short time, leaving the region at an early age to move to Paris for artistic training.

It was there that he discovered several works and artists, including paintings inspired by Breton landscapes. He was fascinated by these representations and chose to make them his sole source of artistic inspiration.

Janssaud therefore settled in Concarneau, Brittany, and worked with a group of painters called the Concarneau group. There were eleven of them, and they painted coastal seascapes, boats and harbors. They worked on light, depicting sunrises and sunsets. He had a fairly bourgeois audience and sometimes depicted women in his paintings and watercolors.

He didn't have a great posterity, one of his paintings is preserved at Orsay. He is not very famous today, but his works are appreciated on the auction market. The artist's quotation was at its highest in the 1990s, as many of his works were presented for sale.

He can be included in a realist current, like Krachkowsky or Bessonov.

Janssaud's imprint on his period

Mathurin Janssaud didn't really mark his time. He is better known in Brittany, where he worked all his life. Nevertheless, his works are still appreciated on the auction market and their quotation, although lower than twenty years ago, is stable.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Not all of Janssaud's works are signed. They may be at the bottom of the painting, but if you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised to be sure of its originality.
