The artist's works and style
Zinaida Serebryakova is close to the realist movement, following in the footsteps of Répine, who was her master. However, the influences on her work are manifold, and she adds something more personal than realism, having never said herself that she belonged to a particular movement. She produced drawings and paintings, as well as sculptures ; although there is only one listed presented at auction.
Zinaida Serebryakova, Russian realist of the École de Paris
Sinaida Jewgenewna Serebryakova (1884-1967) was a Russian realist artist.
She was born in Neskutchnoye, and studied at the school of Maia Tenicheva, a Russian patron of the arts. To perfect her training, she went to Italy and then Paris, where she studied in the studio of Illiya Répine, the undisputed master of Russian painting. She eventually stayed in Paris, forced into exile by the revolution raging in her native country. At the start of her career, she produced mainly landscapes and compositions depicting the everyday life of the Russian people, generally the poorest.
Russia did not welcome or understand her work, forcing her to produce charcoal drawings, mostly of female nudes. Despite numerous requests, the artist refused any commission to portray a Russian politician - she didn't want to take part in Bolshevik propaganda.
She became a naturalized French citizen and enjoyed great success during her lifetime with her oil paintings in Paris, depicting mostly women and young girls for the most prized.
After establishing a certain comfort of living in Paris, she traveled to Africa, which gave rise to some absolutely unique Orientalist portraits, as treated from the angle of Russian realism.
