The artist's style and technique
Roy Lichtenstein is one of the major artists of the Pop Art movement, producing a colossal quantity of prints and silkscreens (over 10,000), as well as tapestries, paintings, ceramics and sculptures.
The life of Roy Lichtenstein
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), an American artist and major figure of the Pop Art movement, was born in Manhattan into a relatively well-off family. He acquired a certain artistic culture from his mother, who was a pianist. The high school where he attended didn't offer art classes, so he drew on his own initiative, initially inspired by jazz musicians whose portraits he painted during concerts. He went on to study fine art in Ohio, but his training was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served in the Army. He traveled to England in 1944, then to several European cities, without stopping painting. Shortly before his father's death, he returned to the United States and received a grant to finance his studies.
He then embarked on a teaching career, while continuing to paint and exhibit. His first solo exhibition took place in Canada in 1951. His early works are characterized by abstract expressionism, which he was slow to adopt. His work shifted to Pop Art, thanks to a challenge from his son and a substantial body of work on comic strips. In the 60s, he began producing posters.
He died in 1997 of pneumonia in New York.
Lichtenstein's imprint on his period
Roy Lichtenstein leaves a considerable mark on twentieth-century art. Less famous than the canvases of the artist of the same movement Andy Warhol, his works are nevertheless highly sought-after and highly quoted on the auction market, one of his works having sold for 5.5 million euros at auction during his lifetime. Having explored different artistic movements and media in his work, the artistic legacy he leaves is considerable for the art world.
His signature
Not all of Roy Lichtenstein's works are signed. He usually signs : " R. Lichtenstein " at the bottom right of his supports, in rather evasive handwriting.
