The life of Moïse Kisling
Moïse Kisling was born on January 22, 1891 in Krakow, Poland. Driven by his talent, he moved to Paris in 1910. Kisling exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in 1912, and became friends with many of the artists of his time. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Foreign Legion and obtained French nationality twelve years later.
In 1919, Kisling had his first major exhibition. His marriage to an officer's daughter enabled him to travel and discover new landscapes, bringing new vivacity to his palette.
Devoted to forging links between different artists, his studio on rue Joseph-Bara became a veritable meeting place for Parisian artists and intellectuals, frequented in particular by Max Jacob, Jean Cocteauand Pierre Reverdy.
Kisling, like many artists, was affected by totalitarianism and had to flee to the United States. However, he continued to paint and even exhibited in Los Angeles in 1942. He returned to France four years later, with bolder color choices and more opulent floral compositions. He reaffirmed his place on the French art scene with an exhibition at Galerie Drouant-David in 1951, before dying two years later in 1953.
The artist's works and style
Initially influenced by the Fauvist, Cubist and Post-Impressionist movements, Moise Kisling's early works were innovative.
In the 1920s, the artist developed a more realistic style and explored themes such as portraits, nudes and landscapes. Often characterized by warm colors and expressive features, Kisling's compositions are vivid, testifying to the artist's desire to capture the essence of the subject depicted. Very popular, his nudes are distinguished by their sensuality and elegance.
Marked by visible, dynamic brushstrokes, Kisling's works are distinguished by their energetic painterly approach. What's more, the artist was able to accurately capture the subject's emotions and transcribe them with perfection onto his canvas.
In addition to painting, Moise Kisling experimented with various techniques such as engraving and mixed compositions.
