The life of Serge Mendjisky
Serge Mendjisky was born in Paris in 1929 into a family of artists. Thanks to his father, Maurice Mendjisky, a member of the Ecole de Paris, Serge Mendjisky rubbed shoulders as a child with such greats as Picasso and Dunoyer de Segonzac, who showed him great friendship.
After taking part in the Paris uprising of 1944, Mendjisky entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. A year later, he left and became close to Paul Grimault, who introduced him to the technique of cartooning.
In the 1950s, Serge Mendjisky moved to Nice, where he met Picasso and Dunoyer de Segonzac, who encouraged him to paint. At the same time, Mendjisky worked in a workshop specializing in photogravure, a photographic method of obtaining engraved plates for use in letterpress printing. The artist held his first exhibition in Paris in 1959. His success was immediate, and he exhibited internationally.
Following in the footsteps of the Paris School, Mendjisky devoted himself entirely to painting. An admirer of Cézanne and Van Gogh, his style evolved towards the pointillism that would be his trademark until the 2000s.
Then Mendjisky devoted himself entirely to photography. Influenced by Picasso, he borrows the collage technique to modify images and the perception of reality. The artist thus practices a photographic cubism.
Serge Mendjisky died in 2017, leaving behind him a significant imprint on art history.
