The life of Leonor Fini

Leonor Fini (1908-1996) was a twentieth-century Italian artist whose fame rests mainly on her exceptional talent as a portraitist through surrealism. She was born into a wealthy family, but soon moved to Tieste and left Buenos Aires. Her father insisted that she return to Argentina, but she stayed with her mother throughout her childhood and adolescence. She showed a complicated temperament, being expelled from the schools she attended. Her uncle, however, taught her philosophy, an interest that was probably partly responsible for her choice of artistic movement. Her family predestined her for a legal career; instead, she attended drama school. At the same time, she began painting at the age of fifteen. She moved to Milan at the age of 17, and organized her own exhibition in 1929, at just 21. She fell in love with Prince Lorenzo Lanza del Vasto, then left Italy to join him in Paris, where she met André Breton and Max Jacob. She posed for Henri Cartier-Bresson during a trip to Northern Italy, and shortly afterwards Christian Dior organized her first solo exhibition in Paris. She went on to create her "automatic and metaphorical drawings", the output of which was colossal. She had an affair with Max Ernst and traveled extensively, sometimes with him and sometimes alone. During the war, Leonor Fini was forced into exile in the Free Zone. In 1939, Fini exhibited for the first time in New York. The artist was a great success and became a media personality, causing a sensation with her appearances at society parties.
