The life of Adrien Demont

Adrien Demont (1851-1928) was a French Impressionist painter.

He first studied law, then joined the French Army as a volunteer at the time of the war against Prussia.

Returning to Douai, he collaborated with Émile Breton, Camille Corot and Joseph Blanc.

He met and married Virginie Demont-Breton, also a painter and daughter of Jules Breton. The two artists settled in Wissant, on the Opal coast, which increased their interest in maritime scenes in their painting.

In 1890, he became a member of the jury of the Salon des Artistes Français. He and his wife took several students under their wing.

The painter received two gold medals at world exhibitions, and organized a solo show at the Galerie Georges Petit.

One of his daughters, Adrienne Ball-Demont, also became an artist.
