The artist's style and technique

Fernand Verhaegen is part of the impressionist movement, but also sometimes pointillist or realist in some of his works. He is influenced by the French Impressionists. He produced mainly oils on canvas and drawings.

The life of Fernand Verhaegen

Fernand Verhaegen, real name Fernand Verraghen, was a painter and aquafortist born in 1883 in Belgium. He lost his parents at an early age, and few details are known about his youth. In 1900, he moved to Brussels to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. There, he met Rik Wouters and Edgar Tytgat.

He was soon exhibiting his work all over Belgium: Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent... When the First World War broke out, he went into exile in England, where he continued to paint, before traveling to Paris and the Côte d'Azur. He then exhibited in 1920 and 1922 at the Venice Biennale.

His work and style evolved over the course of his career, his pointillist canvases suggesting Georges Seurat, however a greater stylistic kinship is established with Kees Van Dongen.

He died in 1975 in Belgium.

Verhaegen's imprint on his time

Fernand Verhaegen left an important artistic legacy, bearing witness to Belgian society and culture in the 20th century. His works are exhibited in many prestigious art collections around the world, even though he is little known to the general public.

Today, his works are still successful at auction. Although some of his works are held in museums in Europe, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Fernand Verhaegen sometimes signs his works, mostly at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, some copies do exist, which is why expertise is essential.
