The life of Claude Viallat

Born in 1936, Claude Viallat began his training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier and the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

He painted without frames on canvas, breaking with traditional painting.

A founding member of the Supports/Surfaces group in 1969 with Bioulès, Claude Viallat explored abstract forms on industrial tarpaulins. The group was a short-lived movement. Challenging traditional pictorial means, he theorized his art. According to him, the material itself is more important and the subject thus takes a back seat.

Claude Viallat wishes to desacralize the work, demystify painting and always return to the idea of work and the Marxist ideology to which he adheres.

The artist's works and style

Some realistic landscapes and figurative representations can be found in the artist's collection, but they are infrequent. In most of his works, abstraction predominates, giving way to a dynamic interplay of color and form. Claude Viallat fragments not only through his artistic technique, but also through his use of space.

In some canvases, Viallat uses the leitmotif of the "bean" from traces of sponge that cover the canvas. He desacralizes paint, replaces sheets or waxed canvas, thus using standardized, industrial materials.

L'empreinte de Claude Viallat son époque

Considered one of the greatest colorists of the 20th century, Claude Viallat is influenced by Matisse and Picasso. He explores fragmentation and spatial distribution. His passion for bullfighting is reflected in his depictions of bullfights on everyday objects. He is also inspired by primitive African, New Zealand and Australian cultures, incorporating forms of Indian artifacts into his work.

His international renown is marked by numerous exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 1982 and his representation of France at the Venice Biennale in 1988.
