The career of Joseph Czaky

Joseph Czaky was born in 1888 in Hungary. He began his training at the Higher School of Decorative Arts in Budapest, but preferred to learn the technique of stone-cutting by working directly on building sites.

Like many artists of the Paris School, he arrived in France very poor, with only the desire to create in a new cultural and artistic emulation. He moved in with Hungarian friends for a while, then to the artistic residence of La Ruche. Two years after his arrival in Paris, in 1910, he was already exhibiting at the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts. Shortly afterwards, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. In 1914, he presented his first cubist head, which was to become the foundation of his artistic identity. He created a scandal in 1912 at the Salon d'Automne, in the Salle des Cubistes, to which he was refused access.

In 1914, he enlisted in the French Army after meeting Léon Rosenberg. Working with him for a few years, he came to the realization that he needed to break away from Cubism, simplifying its forms and carrying out a great deal of research into the composition of his works. He broke off his contract in 1930, founding the Union des artistes modernes with other artists.

He died in 1971 in Paris.

Joseph Czaky's imprint on his period

Czaky carried out a great deal of reflection on Cubist art in his sculptures and compositions, starting from its analytical state at the beginning of his career, until moving beyond synthesism after his contract with Léon Rosenberg. His output is substantial, and today he remains a highly appreciated and sought-after artist on the art market.
