In his lifetime, André Lanskoy enjoyed great success and a high international rating that has not diminished today. His paintings and sketches, produced in the 1950s and 1960s, are the most sought-after and attract the greatest interest from collectors. The price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €10 to €230,000, a substantial delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to the artist's works. For example, a work signed by Lanskoy can fetch hundreds of thousands of euros, as evidenced by one of his oils on canvas sold for €230,000 in 2019.

The artist's style and technique

Influenced by his Russian origins, André Lanskoy's works are characterized by abstract, dynamic and expressive representation. A great master of geometric form, color and texture, the artist was able to create vibrant, captivating compositions. Indeed, color and material play a key role in his creations. He experiments by superimposing different layers of color to create effects of matter and relief, bringing to life serifs of almost sculptural proportions. Finally, to enhance his luminous works and further draw the eye, he frequently employs black backgrounds.

André Lanskoy, between Russian and French abstraction

André Lanskoy (1902-1976) studied in St. Petersburg and then Kiev, and initially envisaged a military career. He joined the White Army in Kiev during the 1917 revolution. From an early age, he showed a genuine interest in the visual expression of color in his everyday scenes, a passion that was to win him over. His talent and interest led him to change course.

André Lanskoy arrived in Paris in 1921 as a self-taught artist and turned to abstraction in 1938, spending many years experimenting with different currents. He frequented art institutions and befriended renowned painters. Lanskoy exhibited successfully and collaborated with the Galerie Louis Carré. His abstract period is influenced by Paul Klee and Kandinsky, and his gestural, colorful style earns him recognition as a pillar of the "lyrical abstraction" movement, along with Olivier Debré. 

In 1951, Lanskoy created tapestry cartoons for the manufacture d'Aubusson, one of which was acquired for the liner France in 1955. He also explores collage and the etching technique. The artist is also interested in mosaics. 

By 1960, André Lanskoy achieves total mastery of his abstract expression. His artistic style is characterized by organic forms, vivid colors and expressive gestures. His abstract paintings reflect a freedom and energy emanating from his experiments with vibrant shapes and colors.
