Style and technique of artist Pierre Grieud
Pierre Grieud experimented with several currents, none of which is truly characteristic of his entire career. He was inspired by Nabis principles. First he was a symbolist, then a fauvist, before turning to expressionism and finally returning to more classical painting. He is most influenced in his work by Gauguin.
Pierre Grieud's life
Pierre Grieud (1876-1948) was born and died in Paris. His father was an engineer. He does his military service and refuses to follow a scientific vocation, a desire his father has for him. He was self-taught, and drew much inspiration from Eugène Delacroix's diary in his way of working and his pace of life. He visited Italy, where he discovered the primitives ; and soon managed to make connections in Paris in the art world.
In 1900, he was one of the founders of the Revue naturaliste, forerunner of the Collège d'esthétique moderne. He helped draft the statutes of the Salon des refusés, which later became the Salon d'Automne. He meets Kandinsky and works with Jean Metzinger.
A pioneer, he is the first French artist to join NKVM (New Munich Artists' Association). He writes articles to maintain the link with the Cavalier Bleu in France.
He wants to distance himself from the Cubist movement and takes part in a hoax to denigrate the current. Vauxcelles writes about him.
He paints Hommage à Gauguin for a retrospective. Towards the end of his career, he was asked to paint a religious fresco, although these works did not constitute the majority of his career.
He was known and admired during his lifetime, with Kahnweiler even devoting a special exhibition to him. Although he has less posterity than Vlaminck or Charchoune, his canvases are in demand among collectors.
Pierre Grieud's imprint on his time
Pierre Grieud marked his time with his visionary spirit and pictorial versatility. He stood out for his Fauvist nudes, with black strokes on the outlines.
His works are prized at auction today, and collectors play a major role in preserving his work, even though European museums own some of his production.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Pierre Grieud very often signs his works, most often at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. Here's an example.
