Nicolas Roerich, twentieth-century Russian symbolist
Nicolas Konstantinov Roerich is a Russian artist born in Saint Petersburg in 1874.
He first studied law, but also philosophy and archaeology, then art history. Deciding to become a painter, he trained in Paris in the techniques of drawing and oil on canvas with Fernand Cormon. Parallel to this production, he also created ballet sets, and mosaics for the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God.
In 1920, he and his wife moved to New York, where they settled and joined theosophical circles. They left the city a few years later for an expedition to Asia. They visited many countries, his most famous paintings depicting the Himalayas dating from this period.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1929 and died in 1947 in India.
The success of Nicolas Roerich's works at auction
The inventiveness of Roerich and the exceptional quality of his works make him an essential draughtsman and painter of twentieth-century Symbolist art. His use of violet hues to capture the atmosphere of Tibet and the Himalayan mountains makes his canvases particularly unique and prized.
The auction market itself plays a role. It offers a competitive setting where collectors and art enthusiasts can vie to acquire unique pieces. This can lead to overbidding and push prices higher, contributing to the success of Roerich's works.
