Style and technique of artist Constantin Terechkovitch
Constantin Terechkovitch is first and foremost a portraitist. He portrayed important men and women of his time. His preferred medium remains oil on canvas, although he also produced drawings and prints.
Constantin Terechkovitch, forgotten portraitist
Kostia Terechkovitch is a Russian painter born in 1920 in Moscow, into a relatively well-off Russian family. Her parents were intellectuals close to influential Russian artists and collectors, including the famous Shchukin. He knew Shchukin from childhood and took a keen interest in his collection. Thanks to him, he discovered the artists distributed by Ambroise Vollard, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler and Berthe Weill. In this way, he discovered Matisse and nascent Cubism well before the scandal in Room VII. It was this collection that inspired him to start painting. He passed his baccalaureate at the age of fifteen, and went on to study painting with Constantin Youon, then at the Moscow School of Painting. Like many of his fellow painters, he left Russia for Paris in 1917, when the Soviet revolution broke out. He didn't arrive until 1920, after passing through Constantinople, among other places.
He resigned from his factory job after making money betting on horses. He soon became associated with the painters of Montparnasse, including Soutine, Kisling and Chagall. He obtained a contract in 1925 and ended his life in Monaco, where he created sets for ballet and theater.
Terechkovitch's imprint on his period
Constantin Terechkovitch left his mark on his era in Russia, France and Europe, although the general public doesn't remember him much today. Nevertheless, his technical mastery and personal history are of interest to collectors : his works are highly sought-after on the auction market.
