She was born in Guizhou, and studied at the Shanghai Academy of Music. She married the painter Zao Wu Ki, and didn't start painting until the age of 37, thanks to the teaching of Lin Fengmian.

Lalan then settled in Paris with her husband, after living for some time in Hong Kong.

After her divorce, she became interested in informal art and developed her painting around lyrical abstraction and calligraphic abstraction. She incorporated a certain synaesthesia into her canvases, drawing on her musical knowledge and skills.

Lalan then explored the art of synthesis, returning to abstraction at the end of her career.
