Rating and value of Printz furniture

Prinzt is a French cabinetmaker and decorator quite well known to furniture enthusiasts. If you own one, it may be worth more than you think. On the art market, Printz furniture prices can be very high at the auctioneer's hammer.

His wooden furniture is particularly prized, and the price at which it sells on the art market ranges from €300 to €3,244,000, a fairly substantial range, but one that says a lot about the value that can be attributed to Printz furniture.

In 2022, a low ebony marquetry storage cabinet dating from 1937 sold for €3,244,000 while it was estimated at €858,700 to €1,431,180 by Sotheby's, so the high estimate was almost multiplied by 3.

Style and technique of Printz furniture

Printz's work is part of the Art Déco trend. Eugène Printz also creates floor lamps. He uses wood, but adds gilded bronze details (as Gabriel Viardot) and glass, especially in his lighting fixtures (as Raymond Subes). His furniture features ebony marquetry.

The life of Eugène Prtiz

Eugène Printz (1879-1948), a French cabinetmaker and decorator, produced many sober, elegant lighting fixtures that are prized at auction.

He trained as a cabinetmaker in his father's workshop, which made copies of furniture. As early as 1925, he managed to exhibit work at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, which he produced in collaboration with Pierre Charreau.

He then exhibited at the Salon des Décorateurs, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne, where he gained recognition and appreciation for his work. At the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, he presented for the first time the desk made for Marechal Lyautey.

He went on to create some of the desks for the Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris.

He was very well known during his lifetime, receiving commissions from the City of Paris, the Princesse de la Tour d'Auvergne, and various European and overseas clients.

His works are world-famous, notably the sconces lighting fixtures that take up little space and have an aesthetic made to go with any interior.

The success of Eugène Printz furniture

Eugène Printz lighting fixtures are very successful because they are minimalist and elegant. They can go with any interior, whatever the style of the room.

Today, his furniture is no longer on the market. Consequently, one of the only ways to acquire Printz furniture is through the auction market, where works by the artist are regularly offered for sale.

Recognizing the signature on a Printz work

Not all works produced by Eugène Printz are signed. Copies may also exist, which is why it's important to have your pieces appraised.
